 Invitation

Investment in hydropower is investment in the green economy. The key issue is to develop dams and hydropower in a sustainable way. Advanced technologies, new equipments and materials for dam construction have been achieved in different countries. It is necessary for engineers from all over the world to share the new progress. After a series of successful and fruitful conferences such as Hydropower 1996, Hydropower 1998, Hydropower 2004 and Hydropower 2006, Hydropower 2013 international conference jointly sponsored by Chinese National Committee on Large Dams (CHINCOLD) and China Society for Hydropower Engineering (CSHE) will provide a forum for strengthening the international communication and cooperation in hydropower and promote future development of hydropower in a safe, economic, and eco-friendly way.

CHINCOLD Annual meeting was held successfully in 2011 and 2012. New technologies for dam construction have been presented and discussed. Nearly 1000 experts and scholars from CHINCOLD member organizations have attended the events. The meetings have offered the members a platform for communication and cooperation on dam construction. In order to promote this communication, CHINCOLD 2013 Annual meeting will be held combined with Hydropower 2013.

In recent years, rockfill dams, a popular and competitive dam type, have gained vigorous development due to its advantages in economy and safety. During the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 in Sichuan, China, Zipingpu concrete faced rockfill dam (H=156m) has demonstrated the good performance of rockfill dams in seismic resistance. With increasing of the height of rockfill dams and facing more complicated geographic and geologic conditions, many challenging problems have arisen. To provide a platform for professionals to exchange their experiences in rockfill dams, Chinese National Committee on Large dams (CHINCOLD) and Brazilian Committee on Large Dams (CBDB) have jointly sponsored the 1st and the 2nd International Symposiums on Rockfill Dams in 2009 in Chengdu, China and in 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, respectively.

Hydropower 2013--CHINCOLD 2013 Annual Meeting and the 3rd International Symposium on Rockfill Dams will be held on 1-3 November 2013 in Kunming, the Capital City of Yunnan Province, China.

It is great honor for the Organizing Committee to invite you to join Hydropower 2013--CHINCOLD 2013 Annual Meeting and the 3rd International Symposium on Rockfill Dams. We sincerely hope that this conference will contribute significantly to promote the worldwide successful experience in sustainable development of hydropower and dams. We believe the conference will provide a broader communication space and more opportunities for various specialists involved in the field of hydropower and dams.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Kunming, China in November 2013.

Venue and Date

Hydropower 2013--CHINCOLD 2013 Annual Meeting and the 3rd International Symposium on Rockfill Dams will be held on 1-3 November 2013, in Kunming, Yunnan Province, located at the southwest of China.

Yunnan Province is very rich in water and hydropower resources. It is one of the most important hydropower energy bases in China. There are many large dams and hydropower projects completed or under construction in this area.

Kunming is the ideal venue for leisure traveler, which is located in the south of China. As the capital of Yunnan Province, Kunming, also known as the "city of eternal spring," is one of the most pleasant and relaxed cities in China. Kunming is the focal point of Yunnan minority culture. Some 26 ethnic minorities such as Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai, Hani and more inhabit the region. Each group has its own featured festivals such as the Torch festival of Yi people, the Golden Temple Fair and so on. The hugely successful 1999 International Horticultural Exposition enhanced the city's influence in the world resulting in a snowball effect upon tourism as more and more foreigners come to discover this enchanting part of the country.

Its alluring highland scenery, bewitching karst landform, varied and exotic habitats and customs and places of historical interest can be found at major scenic spots such as Dianchi Lake, Stone Forest, the Village of Ethnic Culture, Grand View Park, etc.

With its convenient transport links in and out of the city, Kunming welcomes and sees off tens of thousands of visitors every day.

Post Technical Tours

There are many large water resources and hydropower projects completed or under construction in China. 4 technical tours will be arranged within 3~4 days after the Conference to some typical dams. Those who will take part in the study tours will not only visit the dams, but also enjoy the beautiful scenes of Yunnan Province and other places. A minimum number of 10 participants is necessary for the tour to take place.

Details of the technical tours will be issued in the Second Bulletin.

Tour 1: Kunming--Xiaowan Arch Dam--Nuozhadu Core Rockfill Dam

Participants taking part in this tour will have an opportunity to visit Xiaowan Arch Dam and Nuozhadu Core Rockfill Dam. Xiaowan Arch Dam is 294.5m high with installed capacity of 4200MW. It is the highest arch dam completed in the world. The water level has reached the normal water level of 1240m in 2012. Nuozhadu Hydropower Project is the 5th hydropower station of the middle and lower reach of Lanchangjiang River. The main dam of the project is an earth core rockfill dam (ECRD) with the dam height of 261.5m. It is the highest ECRD in China and the third highest ECRD in the world. The construction of Nuozhadu ECRD has employed many state of the art technologies, which include the using of mixed gravelly soil for earth core, digital dam technology for construction quality control, etc.

During the tour, participants can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of Xishuangbanna. Xishuangbanna is the southernmost prefecture of Yunnan Province. The prefecture is nicknamed "Aerial Garden" for its luxuriant and multi-layered primitive woods and tropical rain forests, which are teeming with nearly 1000 species of animals and 5,000 kinds of plants.
