The 4th International Symposium on Rockfill Dams was held together by Brazilian Committee on Dams, CBDB and Chinese National Committee on Large Dams, CHINCOLD in Belo Horizonte, Brazil from 17th to 19th May. More than 200 delegations from Brazil, China, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Italy, Switzerland and other countries participated in the symposium, including President of ICOLD, Mr. Anton Schleiss, Honorable President of ICOLD, Mr. Cassio B. Viotti and Mr. Jinsheng Jia, and Chairman of CBDB, Mr. Pinheiro Machado. Key developments on Construction Materials and Methods, Impermeabilization Elements of Rockfill Dams - design, construction, performance and General Description of Recent Projects Involving Rockfill Dams were deeply discussed.
International Symposium on Rockfill Dams was a prestigious international academic congress, hosted in turn by CBDB and CHINCOLD according to the agreement signed between CBDB and CHINCOLD in 2008 during the 80th ICOLD Congress in Paris, whose purpose is to promote the development of Rockfill damming technology in the world by deep academic communication and project investigation.
The opening ceremony of the symposium was hosted by Mr. Pinheiro Machado. Mr. Anton Schleiss, Mr. Cassio B. Viotti and Mr. Jinsheng Jia delivered opening speeches. At the opening ceremony, six projects were awarded the INTERNATIONAL MILESTONE PROJECTS HIGH ROCKFILL DAM, which were the Nuozhadu Hydropower Project from China (ECRD, 261.5m high), Usina Hidroelétrica Itá (Itá HPP, CFRD, 125m high) and Furnas Hydroelectric Plant (ECRD, 127m high) from Brazil, Aguamilpa solidaridad dam (CFRD, 187m high) from Mexico, Porce III (CFRD, 151m high) from Colombia and Chaglla (CFRD, 211m high) from Peru. Mr. Pinheiro Machado, Mr. Anton Schleiss, Mr. Cassio B. Viotti and Mr. Jinsheng Jia awarded the certificate to the representatives of these projects. The INTERNATIONAL MILESTONE PROJECTS award is established by CHINCOLD, CBDB, which is to honor those projects that have innovation on dam design, construction, operation and achievements on ecological environmental protection. Xinchun Yan, deputy director of China Huaneng Group, as the representative of Nuozhadu Hydropower Project, received the award and introduced the project.

27 Chinese participants, headed by Mr. Jinsheng Jia, Honorable President of ICOLD and Vice president and S. G. of CHINCOLD, took part in the symposium. Dr. Jinsheng Jia, Dr. Zeping Xu, Dr. Yao Xu and other participants made presentations on the developments of Rockfill dam in China. Dr. Zeping Xu and Dr. Yao Xu were awarded the Excellent Paper.

Accompanied by Mr. Viotti, Chinese delegation took the post study tour to the Tres Marias Rockfill dam, 75m high, which made a 21 billion m3 reservoir and a 387.6MW hydropower plant.
