The 2012 Annual Congress and the 6th Session of the First Board Meeting of the Chinese National Committee on Large Dams (CHINCOLD) was successfully held during Oct. 11 to 12 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Over 530 delegates from the Ministry of Water Resources, National Energy Administration, the People’s Government of Sichuan, the Water Resources Department of Sichuan Province and CHINCOLD Member Units attended the Congress, including 7 representatives from HKSAR and over 20 foreign representatives from the US, the UK, Australia and Africa.
Mr. Wang Shucheng, President of the CHINCOLD chaired the Congress; Mr. Lu Youmei, Honorary President of the CHINCOLD, Dr. Jiao Yong, Vice President of the CHINCOLD and Vice Minister of Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. Zhang Ye, Vice President of the CHINCOLD and Deputy Director of South-to-North Water Diversion Office under the State Council, etc. joined the Congress.

The Conference Hall
The theme of this Congress focuses on the technical progress in the construction and management of reservoirs and dams. Targeting the new development in reservoirs, dams and hydropower in China during the 12th 5-year plan, over 10 famous domestic and foreign experts and scholars was invited to make keynote reports. The Congress offered a good platform for attendants to communicate and summarize experience in the construction and management of major reservoir and hydropower projects, and to discuss issues of concern in the dam engineering, such as dam safety management, environment-friendly new technologies, digitalized design and modernized construction, etc. The Congress also invited Mr. Michael Rogers, President of the United States Society on Dams to make a keynote report on the risk management of dams under changing climates, which was a common concern of the industry.

On Oct. 12, five sessions were held, including: 1. key technologies for the construction of high dam projects; 2. risk analysis, reinforcement and safe operation of reservoir and dams; 3. new technologies and products for the construction of water resources and hydropower projects; 4. reservoir, dams and environmental protection; 5 round table meeting on sustainable development of dams and hydropower.
