In line with the need to propagate the letters and recommendations of the World Declaration on Dams and Hydropower for Africa Sustainable Development, launched in 2008, the President of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), Dr. JIA Jinsheng, headed a Chinese delegation to visit two countries in Africa namely Nigeria and Tanzania, on September 10-18, 2011. He was accompanied by some Chinese delegates, and ICOLD Vice President, Mr Imo Ekpo. The delegates from China represented the major development and construction outfits as China Huaneng Group, SINOHYDRO Corporation, CGGC International and CHINCOLD representatives.
The program of the visit included meetings with African experts, technical visit to dam projects, etc. ICOLD President Dr. JIA made a presentation during the session on The Role of Dams and Reservoirs in the new Century both in Nigeria and Tanzania. The speech drew a lot of interest to participants. He assured the stakeholders that tremendous opportunities exist for capacity building within the ICOLD family while investors are available to participate in the development of dams and hydropower in the continent.
Very Senior Government officials from Nigeria and Tanzania were invited to attend the 24th ICOLD Congress in Japan in June 2012 as well as to visit China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) and CHINCOLD in Beijing, China. ICOLD President and team paid courtesy call on some senior officials in Nigeria and Tanzania.
