The 79th Annual Meeting of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) was held at Lucerne, Switzerland from May 29th to June 3rd, 2011. The delegation of Chinese National Committee on Large Dams (CHINCOLD), consisting of almost 60 members, headed by Dr. Jiao Yong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China, and Dr. Jia Jinsheng, President of ICOLD and Vice President and Secretary General of CHINCOLD, participated in this meeting. The delegates were from General Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Planning and Design, IWHR, Yangtze River Water Resources Commission, Yellow River Water Resources Commission, Haihe River Water Resources Commission, Huai River Water Resources Commission, Three Gorges Corporation, China Huaneng Corporation, China Datang Corporation, China huadian Corporation, China Guodian Corporation, SINOHYDRO Corporation, HydroChina Corporation, Xinjiang Administration Bureau for ErtixRiver Basin Development and Water Project Construction and etc.

The International Symposium on Dams and Reservoirs under Changing Challenges, which attracted more than 900 delegates from over 70 countries and regions in the world, was held on June 1st. Through its opening ceremony, Vice-Minister Jiao was invited to address a keynote lecture on Dam operation and management under global climate change----Countermeasures and practice in China.
Meanwhile, President Jia launched his welcome in the opening ceremony. Besides, Mr. U. Studer, Mayor of Lucerne, Mr. W. Steinmann, Chairman of the Swiss Federal Energy Institution, Mr. R. Abdel-Malek, President of International Hydropower Association and Mr. A. Schleiss, President of Swiss Committee on Dams gave their speeches. After the opening ceremony, the press conference was held.

Through this symposium, the experts from China had submitted over 30 papers in total. Meanwhile, around 20 specialists from China, Swiss, Canada, Iran, Japan, Australia, Romania, Thailand, Norway, the UK, Poland, Slovenia, Portugal, Italy and etc, delivered their reports on the following aspects of the stability of the dams, the relationship between dams and disasters and climates, and the dams under fair good conditions. The lecture given by Prof. Xu Zeping of IWHR was highly appreciated by the worldwide professionals.
During the meeting, IWHR, CHINCOLD, Japan commission on Large Dams, Poyry and Lombardi, from Switzerland, US Society on Dams, German committee on Large Dams, Norwegian National committee of Dams, CARPI and etc took part in the technical exhibition.
