Forum on reservoir dams and environmental protection held in Beijing

On Feb. 27, 2010, the forum on reservoir dams and environmental protection was held at China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research in Beijing. The forum was sponsored by Chinese National Committee on Large Dams, China Society for Hydropower Engineering, Internet Science Popularization Alliance of Internet Society of China, and Guanghua Science Popularization Education Foundation. The theme was new requirements under the conditions of energy saving, emission reduction, and climate change.

 

Vice Chairman of the Finance and Economic Committee under the National People's Congress, Former Minister of the Ministry of Water Resources, President of Chinese National Committee on Large Dams, Wang Shucheng, attended the forum and gave an important address.

Hu Chunhong, Vice President of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, was in charge of the forum. Xu Dingming, Director of National Energy Expert Consultative Committee, gave a speech on Meeting Science and Technology Revolution and Promoting Low-carbon Development. Pan Jiahua, Director of Research Centre for Sustainable Development of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, delivered a speech on Re-recognizing Hydropower under Climate Change. Chen Kaiqi, Deputy Chief Engineer of Environmental Impact Assessment Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, addressed a speech on Respecting Environment and Sustainable Development of Hydropower. Zhang Boting, Deputy Secretary General of China Society for Hydropower Engineering, presented a speech on Strengthening Water Resources Management for Fighting Climate Change. Cheng Xiaotao, Deputy Chief Engineer of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research made a speech on Restructuring New Balance for Better Performance of Reservoir Dams in Integrated River Basin Management. Dr. Ma Jing, from China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, gave a speech on Encouraging Hydropower Development for Fighting Climate Change. Chen Zuyu, Academician of Chinese Academy of Science, from China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, and Xiong Minfeng, Director of Hydropower Division of Renewable Energy Department of National Energy Administration, made summary speeches.

 

In addition, Wang Xiaogang, Vice President of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and other experts and scholars in relevant fields as well as journalists from nearly thirty media including Xinhua News Agency, People抯 Daily, Science and Technology Daily etc. attended the forum.

 

This is the first of a series of forums on Reservoir Dams and Environmental Protection sponsored by CHINCOLD. In the remaining time of this year, CHINCOLD will hold forums on Reservoir Dams and Immigrant Settlement, Aquatic Ecosystem, Regional Economic Development, etc. The purpose is to provide a communication platform for government agencies, experts, media, and public to openly discuss interested issues in hydropower development and reservoir dam construction.
