(CHINCOLD website) The 5th International Symposium on RCC Dams was held ceremoniously in Guiyang on November 3 and 4, 2007. Over 450 experts and scholars from 34 countries gathered in Guiyang to discuss the latest development of RCC dams, to celebrate the 30 years anniversary of the application of RCC technology and to study the future development of RCC dams.

SUN Guoqiang, the vice-governor of Guizhou Province on behalf of Guizhou provincial government gave a warm welcome to the experts, scholars and representatives from other countries and expressed the hope to hold a successful symposium. LIU Ning, the chief engineer of Ministry of Water Resources, Luis Berga, the president of ICOLD, JIA Jinsheng, the secretary-general of CHINCOLD, REN Xiangsheng, the secretary of party group and the vice-president of Guizhou Association for Science and Technology delivered their speeches respectively.

It was the 5th international symposium on RCC dams following the symposiums held in Beijing in 1991; in Santander, Spain in 1995; in Chengdu, China in 1999; and in Madrid, Spain in 2003. The six issues of the symposium were: the new trend of technical development of RCC dam construction; planning and design of RCC dams; RCC materials; numerical analysis; construction and operation management of RCC dams; development of CSG; and the application of RCC on other hydraulic structures. A total of 142 papers were received in the symposium, of which, 101 papers from China and 41 from Switzerland, UK, Morocco, Australia, Mexico, German, Canada, and Libya and so on over 20 countries. These papers reflected the latest development and new challenges on design, construction, and operation management of RCC dams, the development of CSG, and the application of RCC dam technology on other hydraulic structures in these countries. These papers will promote the technology development of RCC dam construction; provide the construction experience and the exchanges of scientific results. The success of the symposium will enhance the construction and development of international RCC dams, and lay a good foundation for the technical cooperation of RCC dam construction all over the world.

8 projects were awarded “Honorary Project” on international RCC dams in this symposium as following: China's Longtan Hydropower Project, Colombia’s Miel 1, Japan’s Miyagase Dam, The United states’ Olivenhain Dam, Chile's Ralco Dam, Spain’s Rialb Dam, Brazil’s Salto Caxias Dam, and South Africa’s Wolwedans Dam.

The symposium was jointly hosted by Chinese National Committee on Large Dams, Spanish National Committee on Large Dams, RCC Committee of China Society for Hydropower Engineering, RCC Committee of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, Guizhou Wujiang Hydropower Development Co., Ltd., China Huadian Corporation Guizhou Branch, and Spanish Cement and Application Society.
