FOREWORD

Hydropower is a green energy popular with human. Developing hydropower is an inevitable choice to realize sustainable economic development and boost the construction of Resource Saving and Environment Friendly Harmonious Society. For developing countries, it has become a prerequisite to develop hydropower in such areas as energy industry development and restructuring, the utilization of land resources and revitalization of regional economy as well as environmental protection and sustainable development in many countries. International Conference of Hydropower, which has promoted exchange and cooperation in hydropower area, was held successfully three times in 1996, 1998 and 2004 respectively. For the purpose of further promoting this exchange and cooperation, China Hydropower Engineering Consulting Group Corporation (CHECGC), China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), Chinese National Committee on Large Dams (CHINCOLD), Chinese Society for Hydroelectric Engineering (CSHEE) and Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society (CHES) jointly sponsor International Conference Hydropower 2006, which is also organized by Kunming Hydroelectric Investigation, Design and Research Institute (CHECGC). The conference will be held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China from 23-25 October, 2006. About 300 participants from over 20 countries and regions will take part in this event. 171 papers are contributed from home and abroad. The proceeding is focused mainly on the following topics:

• Issues of Design and Construction of high arch dams
• Dam safety evaluation and reinforcement techniques
• Dam and Environment, including fish way, environment- friendly techniques, reservoir operation considering environmental factors and etc.
• Reservoir sedimentation and downstream river scouring

It is believed that the proceeding would be able to reflect main developments and fruitful achievements in the above aspects. It is my sincere hope that this proceeding will be of some referential value to the decision-makers, investors, researchers and engineers in hydropower industry.
