Sichuan Province is very rich water resources and hydropower resources. It is one of the most important hydropower energy bases in China. Many water resources and hydropower projects are constructed or under construction in this area. According to dam register done by CHINCOLD, there were about 278 large dams (≥30m) in Sichuan by the end of 2009.

The strongest earthquake to hit China in more than three decades jolted Wenchuan County at 2:28 pm on May 12, 2008, killing more than 60,000 people. Wenchuan is about 100 km northwest of Chengdu. Near the epicenter, there are four major large dams, e.g. Zipingpu dam (CFRD, H=156m), Shapai dam (RCC arch dam, H=132m), Bikou dam (clay core rockfill dam, H=105.3m) and Baozhushi dam (PG, H=132m).  Also there are many dams damaged in different extent. But there is no dams breached in the quake-hit region and no secondary disasters happened due to safety of dams.

One technical tour to Zipingpu dam (CFRD, H=156m) and Dujiangyan Irrigation Project with 2000 years history will be arranged on Oct.21, 2009.
Two study tours of 4 days will be organized after the symposium. Those who will take part in the study tours will not only enjoy the beautiful scenes of Sichuan Province, but also visit the rockfill dams completed or under construction.
