Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Station

  Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Project is located on the Daxi River, a tributary of the Xitiao River in Anji County of Zhejiang Province, 57km to Hangzhou, 175km to Shanghai and 180km to Nanjing. It is in the southwest part of the Yangtze Delta Area, where the Shanghai Economic Zone is located, the most concentrated load center and an area with developed industry and agriculture, and is close to the load center of the East China Power Grid.

  The power station is installed with six 300MW vertical shaft, single stage, Francis, reversible pump turbines, with a total installed capacity of 1800MW. The yearly power output is 3160 million kW.h, and power consumption for pumping (trough-fill power) is 4286 million kW.h. It is a pure pumped storage power station to undertake the peak regulation, trough-filling, condensing operation, frequency regulation and emergency reserve of the East China Power Grid.

  The Tianhuangping Power Station has the largest installation for a single powerhouse and highest head as compared with the similar projects

completed or under construction in China. It is also ranked the top ones in the world. The upper reservoir basin (285000m2) is asphaltic concrete faced and three circuits of 500kV dry cable are adopted, which is the first application in China.

  The main structures include upper reservoir, lower reservoir, water conveyance system, underground powerhouse caverns and switchyard, etc. The mountains on the left bank of the river are huge with a relative elevation
difference of about 700m between the top and the foot. The natural elevation difference between bottoms of upper reservoir and lower reservoir is about 590m, which creates a mean head of 570m after the formation of reservoirs, with a max. gross head 610.2m. The horizontal distance between the two reservoirs is about 1km. The length/head ratio (length of water conveyance system against mean power head) is 2.5. All indexes are advantageous and promising.

  The main dam of upper reservoir is a rockfill dam with inclined asphalt concrete facing, 72m high and 350m long at dam crest. The dam of lower reservoir is a reinforced concrete face rockfill dam of 95m high and 230m long. The spillway is of open type at the bank slope, with a max. discharging capacity of 1280m3/s. The reservoir storage capacity is 8.6 million m3.

  The dimension of the underground cavern is 200m 〜 20m 〜 48m. The size of underground transformer cavern is 180m 〜 18m 〜 24m. Two inclined shafts with reinforced concrete lining, 7m of inner diameter, are connected with six penstocks by reinforced concrete manifolds. The penstocks with inner diameter of 3.2m are linked with the pump/turbines.

  The construction of the main structures was formally started in Mar. 1994 and the first and second units were put into operation in 1998. The installation of 6 units has been fully completed now.

  The Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Station lies in the green bamboo forest regarded as one of main bamboo production bases in China. The area is registered as Green Resourceby the UN. The upper reservoir is a huge artificial lake on the top of the mountain with a unique magnificent scenic view, 

which is so called as A Wonder in Tianmushan Mountains. The Tianhuangping Pumped Storage Power Station is one of tourist attractions in Zhejiang Province.
